Hideki Nagasaka pitched a gem for the Lincoln Saltdogs Thursday afternoon, not allowing a run in eight innings or work. The Saltdogs got two runs in the first and that was all they'd need in a 2-0 win over the Schaumburg Flyers.
Nagasaka struck out a career-high nine batters in route to the victory. He allowed just 3 walks and 5 hits. The Saltdogs their runs two runs in the first inning, when a Bryan Warner home run scored Josh Patton, who singled with one out in the inning.
Only one runner advanced as far as third for the Flyers, and that was in the first inning off Nagasaka. Tim Merritt and Mario Delgado singled with one out in the first frame, but Nagasaka struck out Eric Cole and Chris Weekly to keep the Flyers off the board.
Saltdogs closer Byron Embry pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his fifth save of the season. Nagasaka earned the win, improving his record to 6-6 on the season. Flyers starter Derek Bennett pitched a complete game and allowed just the two Saltdogs runs, but is credited with the loss, dropping his record to 1-2 on the season.
The Saltdogs improve to 9-18 in the second half (38-37 overall), while the Flyers falls to 14-13 in the second half (45-30) overall.
The Flyers begin a series with Sioux Falls on Friday, and will start Rick DeHart in his first Northern League appearance of 2004. Lincoln travels to Gary to begin a three-game series in Indiana on Friday, with Darren Truty (4-7, 5.05) the probable starter for the Saltdogs.
